Dear University UMC Family,
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Robert Ver Steeg, the oldest and one of the most cherished members of our community. Robert passed away peacefully over the weekend, leaving behind not just family and friends, but an entire congregation that has been touched by his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering faith.
Robert joined the University United Methodist Church in 1951, just two years after our transition to the current location. For over seven decades, he has been an inspiration to us all—a living testimony to a lifetime of spiritual commitment and community service. His absence will undoubtedly be felt, but his legacy will forever be etched in the history and hearts of those who make up our church community.
Rev. Ruben Esponda has prepared a heartfelt statement remembering Robert, celebrating his life, and offering comfort to those who knew him. We highly encourage everyone to take a moment to read Rev. Esponda's words, which you can find below.
In these moments of grief, let us come together as a community to remember and honor Robert's remarkable life. Details about a memorial service will be announced in the coming days.
Robert's journey may have come to an end, but his spirit and the values he upheld remain a beacon of light for us all. As we remember Robert, let us also remind ourselves of the strength and unity that make University UMC more than just a place of worship, but a true family.
With deepest sympathies,
Leonardo S. Diaz
